Has the unthinkable happened? Reports are coming in that as of December 2010, the PS3 has sold more consoles than the Xbox 360 worldwide.
The gap is minimal though; data suggests that PS3 has sold 43.4 million units while 360 sits on 42.9 million. While NPD data usually reveals Microsoft’s box coming out on top month-in month-out in America, PS3 tops its opponent with ease in European and Asian territories.
Strategy Analytics, who were behind initial reports, offered a comment on this transition. Analyst Jia Wu said: “While the Kinect peripheral has given a boost to Microsoft's Xbox 360 strategy, the console's performance outside of the U.S. continues to disappoint. Global demand for Sony's PS3 has exceeded that of the Xbox 360 in each of the past two years, and we expect that to continue over the coming years.”
However this doesn’t exactly mean Microsoft is sitting in third place as the different price points for each console make profit on each box vastly different.
Still, if you’d have told us four years ago that the PS3 would someday overtake the 360, we’d have had a hard time believing it. While both consoles are still a far way off touching the Wii’s 75.5 million, it’s a pat on the back for Sony this time.
