Soul Sacrifice E3 2012 Trailer Revealed
June 6, 2012 at 3:32 AM

Hello PlayStation Blog readers! First, I wanted to thank everyone for reading my last post announcing Soul Sacrifice. We have received a lot of positive feedback from fans and I can’t wait to share more information about this game with you all!

As we all know, E3 starts today and I’m very excited! But if you couldn't make it out to the Los Angeles Convention Center for the show, don’t worry!

Here is the brand new trailer the team has specifically created for E3.

If you did not see my last post and are wondering, "what is Soul Sacrifice?" then let me enlighten you! It’s a PS Vita game being produced by the legendary Keiji Inafune of Comcept and MarvelousAQL. Famed composers Yasunori Mitsuda and Wataru Hokoyama are also on board working on the music and soundtrack. The theme of this game is “reality blended experience.” Cruelty is a reality in our life, and we have to make sacrifices and pay costs on a daily basis. Inafune-san wanted to blend this "reality" theme into a fantasy world filled with magic, and create a new type of gaming experience that relied on the player making sacrifices in order to obtain great power. Another key feature of the game is the concept of "sacrifice." In order to use sorcery during fierce battles, you must be willing to make a sacrifice – ranging from personal belongings to a limb, maybe even a life. If you simply think of this game as a "dark fantasy," then your expectations will be betrayed – but in a good way.

Stay tuned to the Playstation Blog for more info about Soul Sacrifice!

DUST 514 At E3 2012: Summer Beta, PS Home, And A Vita App
June 6, 2012 at 1:24 AM

Hello from E3! We know you're excited and following all of the great stories coming out of the show this year, we just want to briefly touch on some of the DUST 514 news that we've announced this week and we'll be focusing on at the show.

First and foremost, we have details on our first Beta event of the summer. We know many of you are eagerly anticipating your chance to try out DUST 514, and we're happy to announce that we’ll be doing a big wave of invites for our first summer Beta event on June 29, 2012, and will run throughout that weekend. This will coincide with an update to the Closed Beta containing what we’ve got on show at E3 and more, you can see it in action in our latest trailer (link below). If you haven't already, you can register at www.DUST514.com/beta, and players will be chosen at random to participate. But don't worry if you don't make it into this first round; this is just the first of several Beta events scheduled for this summer, and we're going to announce lots of info and chances to join the action in the coming weeks. If you are already in the DUST 514 Closed Beta as of today, you will have “All Access” to the Beta events over the summer.

Next, starting this week as a part of Sony's Virtual E3 experience, DUST 514 will be fully integrated into PlayStation Home. Our DUST 514 Home Space is a great way for you to get up close and personal with the New Eden universe, and we're really proud of how it's turned out. Its a War Barge cantina in the EVE Universe, you can learn about the history of New Eden, hang out, earn awesome stuff like companions and armor for Home, play multiplayer Slay – the incredible strategic board game – and much more. In addition, we're very excited to let you know that we are making available a wave of 10,000 “All Access” Closed Beta invites that visitors to the DUST 514 Home Space can earn by completing all the activities inside, with access to all the DUST 514 Beta events over the summer. So hurry and get yours before they’re gone! That said, the DUST 514 Space will remain live, and new content will be added, so Home users can definitely look forward to additional Beta keys to be distributed through the DUST 514 Home Space in the future.

Finally, we're ready to talk a bit more about the DUST 514 companion app on the PlayStation Vita, DUST 514: Neocom. The app brings the feel and functionality from DUST 514 on PS3 to Vita, focusing on customization, communication and trade. Every character you use can be customized via DUST 514: Neocom, so you can create and edit customized fittings (load-outs) with a ton of different dropsuits, weapons, vehicles, items and more. You'll also be able to use Neocom to access the in-game Mail system and Friends List, as well as use the Market to get new stuff for your character from the DUST 514 Marketplace using either ISK (in-game earned currency) or Aurum (purchased currency). DUST 514: Neocom is rolling out this year alongside DUST 514.

That's it for now. Be sure to check out the new trailer we've released for E3 which features all new footage of Beta gameplay. Please watch for DUST 514 updates at and after E3!

Thanks! We look forward to seeing you on the battlefield!

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron Unloads at E3 2012
June 5, 2012 at 11:01 PM

Greetings Playstation.Blog readers! I'm excited to share our latest trailer for Transformers: Fall of Cybertron with you, fresh from E3 2012. And I'm here to take your questions: Optimus Prime, Shockwave, Bruticus, Grimlock, and now Metroplex…we have a ton to talk about!

You may know High Moon Studios from our work on Transformers: War for Cybertron back in 2010. With War for Cybertron we had to work hard to prove that Transformers games could be good; with Fall of Cybertron we've set out to show how they can be great. Big words indeed. How we back that up is with the scale and variety of the game we've built in Fall of Cybertron. Transformers needs to have a wide variety of unique characters and a rich assortment of big environments to use their transforming gameplay. We've assembled a big cast of playable characters, each one bringing very unique skills to the battle. Transforming, tight shooting controls, melee, flying, combining, stealth, grappling – we have all these gameplay elements and they all feel right for the Transformers.

Another key focus for us has been story. We wanted a story worth telling and one that felt right to real Transformers fans. What could be more compelling than exploring the fall of the Transformers legendary home planet? A great story, epic setting, and gameplay variety these are what we have set out to offer in Fall of Cybertron. And oh yes, we have Dinobots.

With this latest trailer I might add that its great to unveil a city-sized Transformer (Metroplex) when you want to make a big impression. We are talking multiplayer features for all you PSN players, and you might even see something playable on PSN before the game launch….but more on that at a later time.

I'm online to answer your questions today, so ask your questions in the comments below. You'll see more of us before Fall of Cybertron hits PS3 on August 28. For now, enjoy the trailer!

Assassin's Creed III at E3 2012: New Trailer, Exclusive PS3 Single-Player Missions
June 5, 2012 at 10:00 PM

It's finally here PlayStation Assassins! Just watch, we can talk after you've seen it…

Assassin's Creed III will deliver fluid gameplay and furious combat set against the incredibly evocative backdrop of the American Revolution. Our new Assassin Connor finds himself embroiled in a bloody battle between two forces, but with allegiances that run beyond the color of a soldier's coat…

Son of a Native American mother and British father, Connor's motivation derives from a desire to preserve his people's freedom at any cost. Moving practically unseen, as a truly lethal assassin should, through the roiling, bloody fields of battle, Connor will alter the course of history and become the spark that ignites a revolution.

As a special bonus for our beloved PlayStation Assassins, we’ll include EXCLUSIVE unlockable content available only on the PS3. Just for choosing to play Assassin’s Creed III on the PS3 you’ll be able to download four additional single-player missions at launch!

Assassin's Creed III for PS3

We have been working for over two years to bring Connor's struggle to life, overhauling the entire game engine and refining AnvilNext into an unprecedented technological workhorse, capable of breathing life into hundreds of artificially intelligent characters simultaneously.

It's beyond anything I've seen from this team in the four years I've had the privilege of working with them.
And we are not finished yet!

Ignite the revolution!

E3 2012: We'll Never Stop Playing
June 5, 2012 at 10:41 AM

Just a few moments ago we brought our annual E3 press conference to a close, which marked the official kick-off of E3 and one of my favorite times of the year. As I've said previously, gamers are PlayStation's lifeblood and we will do everything in our power to continue to entertain and amaze you.

Nearly four months after the U.S. launch of PlayStation Vita, we continue to be overwhelmed by the positive response from our gaming community. As demonstrated a few moments ago, we've only begun to scratch the surface of PS Vita's capabilities and gameplay. With new titles like Assassin's Creed 3: Liberation, Call of Duty Black Ops Declassified and PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, in addition to a deep lineup of more than 60 titles that will be available before the end of the year, we continue to build PS Vita's content library with jaw-dropping titles that demonstrate its full power and unique features. The next few months will be extremely exciting for PS Vita and our fans.

In the home, PlayStation 3 continues to deliver rich, immersive games that can only be found on our platform. PS3 provides developers with the industry's most powerful palette to create from, and our extremely talented team at Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios is taking full advantage. We will bring more of what you love with hard-hitting adventures, fast-paced action and suspense-filled mysteries in four new PS3 exclusive titles: Beyond, God of War: Ascension, Last of Us, and PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. Words can't do justice to these titles, so be sure to watch the new content we shared tonight. Our publishing partners also demonstrated some amazing content, including Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed 3 and Far Cry 3, both of which will offer exclusive DLC for PlayStation customers.

In addition to the core games you love, we also introduced Wonderbook, a completely new experience for PS3 unlike anything you've ever seen. Wonderbook puts a physical book in your hands, and when paired with a PS Eye camera, brings to life stories and adventures that allow you to interact with them like never before. We've been working with one of the most popular book franchises in the world for our first title: WonderBook: Book of Spells is a collaboration between PlayStation and J.K. Rowling, creator of the magical world of Harry Potter. Book of Spells will feature exclusive and new original writings from J.K. Rowling, and will utilize PlayStation Move – in the form of a magic wand, to help gamers learn and master the art of spell-casting.

All of our platforms are enhanced by the industry's most robust online entertainment network, PlayStation Network. We strengthened our offering for you tonight by announcing a free new library of games for PlayStation Plus members. PS Plus members now have immediate and instant access to an ever-expanding lineup of great titles that can be downloaded anytime. At launch, the game collection will feature 12 games, including inFAMOUS 2, LittleBigPlanet 2 and Saints Row 2. All of these games will be available to members starting tomorrow, and new games will be rotated in all the time.

PlayStation Suite – which as of today will be called PlayStation Mobile – is about delivering the world of PlayStation to open operating system-based portable devices. It's our goal to make sure that wherever you are and wherever you go, PlayStation's quality content is always available for you to enjoy. Tonight we announced that HTC will be our first non-Sony group partner to have its smartphones PlayStation-certified, which will help expand the PlayStation experience to even more devices and entirely new audiences.

PlayStation Nation has made PlayStation the global leader that it is today and I thank you for your support. As I said onstage just a few moments ago, our one wish for all of you is that you never stop playing. Keep pushing us. Keep driving us. We will continue to do everything in our power to meet and exceed your expectations, providing a gaming universe where you always feel welcome, challenged and amazed.

It's an exciting time to be part of the PlayStation family…and the best is yet to come.

Jack Tretton

Quantic Dream to Take You to the Beyond
June 5, 2012 at 10:38 AM

Hopefully many of you will have seen that we’ve just announced the much anticipated next title from Quantic Dream, the makers of Heavy Rain. BEYOND: Two Souls is an interactive psychological action thriller starring Oscar nominee Ellen Page (Inception, Juno) in the lead role of Jodie Holmes. Yes, I know, Ellen Page — pretty awesome!

Ever since she was born, Jodie has always been different from everyone else. She possesses supernatural powers through her psychic link to an invisible entity she calls Aiden, and this gift has changed her life forever.

In BEYOND: Two Souls you will experience the most striking moments of Jodie’s life as your actions and decisions determine her fate. You’ll also be able to take full control of both Jodie and the entity in spectacular action and adventure scenes. And as Jodie traverses the globe, you will face incredible challenges in emotionally charged events never before seen in a video game.

BEYOND: Two Souls also features a brand-new game engine and will be one of the best-looking games ever seen on a PS3. Don’t take my word for it, watch our E3 trailer above!

And a couple of screenshots below showing Jodie in action:

We’ll have lots more to come in the coming weeks and months, so do stay in touch.

PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale Expands: PS Vita, Drake, Big Daddy
June 5, 2012 at 9:48 AM

In the weeks that have followed the PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale reveal, we've been asking you all to stay tuned for more exciting announcements. Well it's finally time to deliver! We're very pleased to announce that in addition to coming to the PS3, PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale will also be available on the PS Vita with full Cross Play support! Equally exciting is that Nathan Drake of the famed UNCHARTED series and Big Daddy from the amazing Bioshock universe join us as the latest additions to the PlayStation All Stars roster!

PS All-Stars_01

The pick-up and play nature of PlayStation All Stars and the portable power of the PS Vita seem to be made for each other, so bringing the two together was a no-brainer. With Cross Play support, owners of the PS3 and PS Vita versions will be able to play against each other seamlessly, via both local and online play. Both versions of the game feature identical gameplay at a blazing-fast 60 frames-per-second, offering the complete PlayStation All-Stars experience. PlayStation All- Stars PS Vita takes advantage of many of the unique Vita features, including "near" functionality and both front touchscreen and rear touchpad support.

PS All-Stars_02PS All-Stars_03

Equally exciting of course is the announcement of two new characters: UNCHARTED's Nathan Drake and BioShock's Big Daddy. Nathan Drake is a true PlayStation star known to never miss an opportunity for adventure, making him a perfect addition to our roster. Big Daddy's introduction may come as a surprise, but we think he's a character that typifies the celebration that is PlayStation All-Stars. This deep sea giant packs a serious punch when he's angry, offering a fun play style that's fresh and exciting.

E3 week is always an exciting time, and we're really excited to be sharing this news with you all. And of course, stay tuned for more feature announcements leading up to PlayStation All Star's release this Holiday season.

E3 2012: Wonderbook: Book of Spells Features Writing from J.K. Rowling
June 5, 2012 at 9:15 AM

As you may have heard, PlayStation had some exciting news to reveal tonight.

For some time now, we have been working on a project called Wonderbook – an interactive book that uses Augmented Reality technology and PlayStation Move products to bring stories to life before your eyes. The AR in Wonderbook has been developed by London Studio – the team behind EyeToy and EyePet. We believe that this is the most advanced AR out there, not least because it utilizes brand new technology which enables enhanced fidelity.

Wonderbook is a physical book that will act as a platform for a range of different titles that the whole family will enjoy. Games, reading experiences, adventures – the possibilities are endless for Wonderbook, and we can't wait to tell you more about the exciting things you can look forward to on this peripheral. It truly is one book, with a thousand stories. In North America, Wonderbook will be available for $39.99 for both the book and Blu-ray game.

Book-of-Spells-DragonBook-of-Spells-Incendio

The first story is one we are extremely proud to announce. Wonderbook: Book of Spells is a title developed by London Studio, with brand new writing from one of the world's most popular authors – J.K. Rowling.

From the world of Harry Potter, Book of Spells is an enchanted textbook written over 200 years ago by Miranda Goshawk. Open the book and you are immediately transported to the Hogwarts library, where your lessons will begin. Chapter by chapter, you will be able to read about and practice 20 spells, picking up valuable experiences and lessons along the way – as well as house points – just like a student at Hogwarts.

We are proud to have the support and involvement from J.K. Rowling herself, who described the experience in her own words: "Wonderbook: Book of Spells is the closest a Muggle can come to a real spellbook. I’ve loved working with Sony's creative team to bring my spells, and some of the history behind them, to life. This is an extraordinary device that offers a reading experience like no other."

From interactive reading experiences to dueling, spell-casting, and exciting new content, there's so much to discover. We're particularly proud of the Augmented Reality technology, and how we have used it to take storytelling to a whole new level. Over the coming months we'll be bringing you dev diaries, behind the scenes previews, and much more – so watch this space. We can't wait to tell you all about it – from what the artists have been working on, to how we brought J.K. Rowling's background stories of the spells to life, so stay tuned for more on one of our most exciting titles this year.

E3 2012: Assassin's Creed III Liberation Revealed for PS Vita
June 5, 2012 at 9:12 AM

Bet you didn't see this one coming, eh PlayStation Assassins? It's with a great deal of pleasure and a substantial amount of pride that we announce Assassin's Creed III Liberation for PS Vita!

Liberation introduces an all-new assassin named Aveline, and takes place in the rich, varied and vibrant environments of 18th-century Louisiana. For a better idea of how Aveline operates in the more populated urban areas, and to see just a tiny tease of Aveline's stealthy activities in the bayou, you should totally check out the announcement trailer:

During 1765, Aveline stands directly in the path of Spanish forces seeking to overrun and take Louisiana while the rest of the coastal colonies are occupied with the American Revolution. Aveline is a uniquely effective assassin, employing tactics from her mixed French and African lineage and using weapons like the machete, poison-dart blowpipe and dueling pistols.

You should take a moment to better acquaint yourself with Aveline by watching this video:

Illustrating greater depth and dimension in a period of history that would ultimately help shape the world, Assassin's Creed III Liberation expands the Assassin's Creed universe to give a broader portrait of this pivotal era.

E3 2012: Naughty Dog Reveals The Last of Us Gameplay
June 5, 2012 at 9:05 AM

Did you catch the PlayStation press conference livestream? Notice when it went all black? We wanted to set a proper mood, tone, and stage for our debut of The Last of Us gameplay. The venue, as well as the hard work of the press conference production crew, afforded us a fantastic setup. It was an amazing opportunity to showcase our blood, sweat, and pixels on the massive video screen in the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena this Monday night. We're amped by the response we've received so far and looking forward to a very busy, very fun E3.

If you didn't catch the livestream or would like to see unadulterated, pure images of the gameplay watch this video. At this point in the story Joel and Ellie are attempting to get to the bridge and out of the city. They are tourists in an area that's controlled by hunters. They are hunted and yet they too are hunters. Everyone is willing to do whatever it takes to survive. What you'll see is something that we're calling Balance of Power AI. Enemies will react realistically to whatever situation your combat style forces them into. Playing as Joel, Ellie's help and whatever weapons you can scavenge are your best shot at progressing in this brutal, violent world. Check it out:

The Last of Us is a game like no other. We've just begun to show you what's in store for Joel and Ellie as they travel across the post-pandemic United States. The drive to preserve humanity against the infection creates tension that pushes the limits of what constitutes being human. The story will explore the bond that forms between Joel and Ellie, and themes of loyalty, love, and redemption in ways never before experienced in entertainment. It's an emotional rollercoaster that plunges and twists into the depths of what it means to be human and what it takes to survive. So buckle up and brace yourself. Our ride is just getting started.

E3 2012: God of War: Ascension Unleashes on PS3 Next March
June 5, 2012 at 9:01 AM

God of War fans, our journey to Ascension begins now! We just showcased the worldwide premiere of our single-player experience for God of War: Ascension on the grandest E3 stage of them all – the PlayStation E3 press conference. The story behind God of War: Ascension tells the journey of Kratos' redemption from his past sins and the rise of his rage to break free from Ares bond. Our team is excited to explore the tormented past and psyche of Kratos and showcase his journey with a bevy of signature gameplay features, combat advancements, and epic "bigger than life" moments. We've been tucked away working hard here at Sony Santa Monica, and we are super excited to inform you that God of War: Ascension will be unleashing on PS3 on March 12, 2013. We've got a long road ahead of us, but the whole team here at Sony Santa Monica Studios is dedicated to making this the biggest and best God of War yet. Be sure to follow our journey at www.godofwar.com. Now about that single-player demo…

GOWA_01

In the single-player demo we showed off some of our new gameplay mechanics and combat systems. We've evolved our combat system to be more immersive and powerful than ever with a new tether system allowing you to sling enemies around as a wrecking ball, while maintaining a blade attack at the same time, in the air and the ground. Our new world weapon system also allows Kratos to steal enemies' weapons to use against them. Now you can now easily switch back and forth between the blades and sub-weapons mid combo.

Also, if you watched the demo closely, you'll notice that we've replaced some of our QTE mini-game button prompts with a new prompt-less free-form system. While in the mini-game, you'll need to focus when to attack or dodge based off of the enemies actions, instead of an indicated button prompt.

We also showcased our new Life Cycle mechanic. Kratos can use this new ability to control the flow of time on various objects in the environments to solve puzzles, and freeze enemies during combat. Watch the demo for a better illustration of this.

For those of you with 3D-compatible TVs, you'll be able to feel up close and brutally personal with Kratos as God of War: Ascension is going with 3D. We are creating the game in an intelligent way for 3D and not just a converted experience.

You've heard us mention time and time again that single-player is the heart and soul of the God of War franchise. While we are excited to deliver a kick-ass multiplayer experience no one has ever seen before, we are devoting more time, effort and resources than ever into the single-player experience to ensure we exceed everyone's expectations. Our team is committed to delivering yet another epic God of War experience to you.

GOWA_02

If you're going to be amidst the E3 craziness, don't leave the LA Convention Center without stopping by the Sony booth to check out God of War: Ascension. This will be the first time that anyone, press or otherwise, will be getting their hands on our multiplayer game. We're pumped to get people's first impressions and feedback.

If you want to catch a glimpse of God of War: Ascension throughout the week of E3, you can start by tune into SPIKE tonight at 8:00pm Pacific Time for an interview and peek at what fans can look forward to getting their hands on at the PlayStation booth. We will also be kicking off G4's live E3 coverage on Tuesday at 1:00pm , and will be appearing in various LIVE shows on IGN, GameSpot, Machinima, the PlayStation.Blog, and of course collating every bit of God of War news at www.godofwar.com, throughout the week. We'll have some more details to spill, so be sure to tune in and follow us.

GOWA_03

Last time around for God of War III, our Ultimate Collector's Edition took our fans by storm, so we are pleased to announce a truly special Collector's Edition again for God of War: Ascension. We know you've been asking for the ultimate collectible, a Kratos statue, that will be the prized 8" centerpiece of this edition. The CE is also jam-packed in a premium steel book game case, with the official game soundtrack (digital version), a PS3 dynamic theme and PSN avatar pack, double XP points for multiplayer (more on that later), and a DLC pass to unlock all future DLC releases at no additional cost. The team is working hard on a dedicated post-launch multiplayer experience, XP and DLC are going to be treasures you will want. Get started with the Collector's Edition. You'll be able to pick up the Collector's Edition for just $79.99 on March 12 next year. We'll have more information and pictures of the content in the near future, so hang tight.

The Collector's Edition will be limited, so make sure you pre-order it early. We would hate for you to miss out on it! For pre-ordering either the standard or Collector's Edition, you'll be able to pick up our Mythological Heroes Multiplayer DLC Pack as well. This is a universal pre-order item, so you can pre-order at any participating retailer and get the DLC pack.

We've got a long E3 week ahead of us, but we always love reading what our fans worldwide have to say. Your passion is incomparable! We're stoked to hear your feedback and comments, or just flat out excitement. Follow and tweet to me @ToddPapy or @SonySantaMonica for all the latest, and definitely hit up our website. The countdown to March 12th begins now!

Battlefield 3 Premium With Close Quarters Available Today Exclusively On PlayStation 3
June 5, 2012 at 4:42 AM

Hi everyone!

Today, we have some Battlefield 3 news for you straight from this year’s Electronic Arts press conference at E3.

7337762284_215a09046d_o

On stage at E3, DICE Executive Producer Patrick Bach unveiled a whole year of great Battlefield 3 content. If you didn’t catch the press conference yourself, we’ve got the details for you right here!

Our biggest news is the launch of our massive content offer, Battlefield 3 Premium. If you buy Battlefield 3 Premium, you’ll also be able to download and play our latest expansion pack Close Quarters today. That’s two weeks earlier than non-Premium members on PlayStation 3, and one week earlier than Premium members on other platforms thanks to the early access that PlayStation 3 players are getting!

Here’s the Battlefield 3 Premium launch trailer hot from E3:

Battlefield 3 Premium:
So what does Premium get you? Well, purchasing Premium will give you all five themed expansion packs for Battlefield 3, including two weeks’ early access (except – of course – for the Back to Karkand pack that we released in December last year!). You’ll also get a number of unique in-game items, like the new ACB-90 knife, a set of Premium dog tags, weapon camos, soldier camos and more.

7337760114_c92b0a845a_o7337759500_fca75a8c6d_o

At E3 today, we also showed the complete line-up of expansion packs for Battlefield 3.

7337760344_f26927ed53_o

1. Back to Karkand

Giving you four fan favorite maps from Battlefield 2 with enhanced destruction (Strike at Karkand, Sharqi Peninsula, Gulf of Oman, and Wake Island) and 10 new weapons, this expansion pack also offers new vehicles like the US VTOL fighter jet, new Assignments, Trophies, and dog tags

7337759900_89b8025c5e_o

2. Close Quarters

Close Quarters brings the Battlefield indoors. The shift in environment means gameplay is fast and frantic, combining instant-action with the tactical squad play Battlefield has always been known for. Four new maps are included, and Close Quarters also adds what we’re calling “HD Destruction” – meaning you can destroy just about everything in the game by firing your normal rifle bullets at them

7337760604_f5f69c26f7_o

3. Armored Kill

Coming September 2012
In September, it’s all out vehicle warfare. Armored Kill includes four new maps (including the biggest Battlefield map ever) and a number of new vehicles including tank destroyers (a new tank class somewhere in-between Infantry Fighting Vehicles and Main Battle Tanks), mobile artillery, an ATV and an all-new gunship.

7337760798_8693a01822_o7337759684_f01108794a_o

4. Aftermath and End Game

Coming late 2012 and early 2013 respectively
Stay tuned for more!

That’s it for now! Battlefield 3 Premium is available today at the PlayStation Store and the Battlefield 3 in-game store for $49.99.

Thanks for reading, and let us know what you think in the comments section below. I’ll also be happy to answer any questions you might have on Premium or the first three expansion packs!

Sound Shapes Confirmed for PS3 and PS Vita + Video of Jim Guthrie's Cat
June 4, 2012 at 11:01 PM

Hey Everyone!

Look, E3 is here, and we know there's all kinds of hot news coming at you from everywhere. So over here at Queasy HQ, we've decided to kick things off a little early with pretty much the biggest announcement we're allowed to give you right now: Sound Shapes is coming to PSN on August 7th. That's… like… a few weeks away! Are you breathing into a paper bag right now to avoid hyperventilating? We are, which is making it kind of hard to type. And if you're not, you should be, because we're also taking this opportunity to sneak out the fact that Sound Shapes is, day-and-date, also coming to PS3.

Yes. That thing you have under your TV, or maybe beside it (or possibly on top, but that sounds kind of dangerous, man!). And no, we haven't been looking in your windows; we've been too busy making Sound Shapes and pricing it at $14.99 for BOTH VERSIONS. Buy it on PS Vita or PS3, and enjoy it on either system! We know. We're freaking out too!

Sound Shapes for NGP (PSN)

Through the magic of crossplay, you'll be able to share content between the two systems without even having to really think about it. It's all thanks to the "cloud" which floats above us like a benevolent data god. Save your campaign data up in the cloud, and download and resume on either platform. Maybe you'll start creating a song at home on the PS3, but then decide that it's not really the place to compose your latest masterpiece! Just download it to your PS Vita and make some beats on the bus. Then get off the bus several stops late, in a part of town you don't know that well, and make some beats there! Then get another bus home, probably.

Oh, and the community is completely shared, so if a friend only has a PS3, or you only have a PS Vita (or any permutation of that) they can still see the levels you've made on the other system. And you can therefore see ALL the levels everyone has made and uploaded. Which will hopefully be a ton of levels. We're really looking forward to what you guys do.

In fact, let's talk about this a bit: You might be aware that we've been collaborating with visual artists and musicians for our campaign levels, and most recently revealed that our pals Superbrothers and Jim Guthrie provided the art and music for Corporeal, a four-song concept album that explores the way in which music can free us from the corporate machine… if it doesn’t crush us first.

It's been a lot of fun working with those guys and we're really happy with the way the levels have turned out. They mix up the gameplay and offer a classic Jim Guthrie soundscape that's a fun contrast to other campaigns. And while the levels themselves are cool, it's super fun to play with all of the music and graphics in the editor–everything, and we mean everything, from the campaign records can be mixed and mashed up with other records to create your own tunes and levels.

Sound Shapes for NGP (PSN)Sound Shapes for NGP (PSN)

Anyway, here’s a video we made in Jim's basement where he attempts to clear the levels in his own album (spoiler: he dies). There is also a demo of how the loop-based music system works for remixing campaign tracks in the editor mode. Also featured: One of Jim's, like, 18 cats. He likes cats.

Is it too late to change the album title to "Chicken Dinner?" The answer is yes. Yes, it is too late.

If you're coming to E3, we hope you come by and check out Sound Shapes. We'll have both PS Vita and PS3 on the floor with content from four of our campaign records and we'll be showing the cross functionality between the two versions. If you can't make it to E3, that's okay because if you didn't notice the game is out on August 7th. Just spend that time regulating your breathing with a paper bag and you'll be fine.

Alright, back to it. ALMOST DONE! (Seriously, we are almost done making the game.)

Want to see the PS3 version of Sound Shapes in action? Be sure to tune into our E3 2012 livestream — we'll be showing it off live at 5:30pm Pacific Time during the countdown to PlayStation's E3 press conference!

Raiden Cuts Loose on PlayStation: The Official Magazine's July issue
June 4, 2012 at 10:04 PM

PTOM's cover may be looking a bit more ragged than usual this month, but we think it perfectly represents the slice 'n' dice awesomeness of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. We've got exclusive screenshots and chat with Hideo Kojima, Atsushi Inaba, and other members of the Platinum Games/Kojima Productions dev team to get the inside scoop on this new more action-oriented turn for the Metal Gear franchise. And FYI: The game's slicing mechanic works suh-weeeeet!

PTOM: July 2012

We also take an in-depth look at 2K Games' new combat shooter Spec Ops: The Line. Yes, another combat shooter. But Spec Ops focus on the dark, mind-twisting psychological effects of war is intriguing and could offer a new twist for the familiar genre. On a lighter note, we take a look at 20 Insane Trophies that we dare you to attempt. 'Cause there's no way we're ever gonna manage to earn 'em. Let us know how you do.

In our early looks and previews, we've go info on God of War: Ascension (OMG! Kratos!), PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale, Crysis 3, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, Dishonored, DmC: Devil May Cry, Resident Evil 6… Can we stop now? Is that enough gaming goodness to suffice? Well, don't worry about it—there's more.

Rockstar Game's Max Payne 3 leads off this month's review section, which also includes our final verdicts on big titles like Starhawk, Prototype 2, Dragon's Dogma, Dirt Showdown, and Mortal Kombat for Vita. But the surprise performers this month? Check out our thoughts on Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Future Soldier and two notable PSN games: Closure and the first episode of The Walking Dead. Not a bad month for games at all…

It's also not a bad month to pick up the July issue of PTOM, arriving on newsstands on Tuesday, June 5 (The first day of E3!).

    Untitled

This week's spotlight is from PSN member echogridlock. Anyone with siblings can tell you that growing up with them is often riddled with fights. Echogridlock looks back on how gaming replaced fighting and led to a reconnection with his brother thanks to PlayStation.

Reconnecting with My Little Big Brother

When I was growing up, my little brother and I would get into the worst fights. It was the stuff of mother's nightmares. To paint a better picture, I once ran a sewing machine needle through his right index finger and the needle tip broke off into his finger. As a trade, he broke my nose which healed crooked and to this day I have one large nostril and one tiny one that I can’t breathe out of.

    It gets better I promise…

One Christmas when I was 12 (my brother was 10) my parents bought us a video game system and the violence stopped. The time spent knocking each other's teeth out was replaced with game time and talking smack about each other's video game skills. We were hooked; we worked together to buy all the games and systems we could get our hands on. Between the two of us we had close to 400 hundred games and over 13 different systems across the years. We started doing everything together like, going to the library and the park after school, we even went over to each other's friend's houses to do what else but play video games. We were inseparable.

I have to chuckle every time I hear or read a story from the news saying that video game violence causes children to be violent. In our case, it may have very well saved one of our lives; no joke, it was that bad.

When I left home for college my brother not only grew taller than me, we grew apart. When I came home from school he was often nowhere to be found. Then he started college and I didn't see him for a few years. He sold off all his video games then he dropped out of school and went walking across the country. In that time, I moved out, married and had two children, and sold my games because I didn't really have anyone to play them with; however I kept the PS2 and later bought two PS3s. My brother eventually got bored, moved back to my parent's house and decided to continue his college career at a school just outside my neighborhood.

This last weekend, my brother needed some time away from my parents and wanted to spend the weekend with my family. At first, he just played with my son (age 2) and daughter (age 3) for a few hours. After awhile, my kids got bored and we fired up the PS3. He quickly became so addicted to Burnout Paradise, I couldn't get him to put the controller down. My son walked in and sat on the floor listening to the music. He started to get tired and climbed into my brother's arms and fell asleep. His sister soon fell asleep as well. After we put them to bed for a nap, we went back into the living room and I told him "You have to try this game Uncharted 3". He asked "Does it have multiplayer? I mean can we both play together?" I said "Yes and we can play together online." He went "Oooo." It was as if we picked up where we left off 8 years ago. He started talking smack how skilled he was and how old age is making me slower. Every time our grouped wiped out in a match, I told him it was his fault. Which it was.

The PS3 provided me with some time well spent with my brother doing something we used to both love, playing games together. For one weekend we were young brothers again. After this spring semester, he will be moving south to Tennessee. Who knows when I will see him again? But maybe I'll buy him a PS3 this Christmas so we can play online.

Congrats to echogridlock, who is now the recipient of a $50 voucher redeemable in the PlayStation Store! Send in your stories here, and feel free to read echogridlock’s original submission right here.

Pulse Wireless Stereo Headset - Elite EditionPulse Wireless Stereo Headset - Elite Edition

E3 is just around the corner, and we hope you're as excited as we are about all of the games that will be unveiled and the upcoming announcements we have in store for you.

Before we get to the big week, we've decided to curb your appetite by giving you a sneak peak at the newest addition to the PlayStation accessories family. Last year we introduced the Official PS3 Wireless Stereo Headset, and this year we're amplifying your audio experience with the brand new Pulse Wireless Stereo Headset – Elite Edition, featuring "BassImpact" technology.

BassImpact technology translates bass sounds into 'pulses' around the earpads of the headset. Pulse – Elite Edition combines 7.1 virtual surround sound with BassImpact to deliver an unprecedented level of immersion, while sharpening your perception on the battlefield or anywhere else you play. This is truly the ultimate audio advantage. Additionally, Pulse – Elite Edition incorporates all the great features of the Wireless Stereo Headset and these new features:

    • Higher fidelity speaker drivers for dynamic sound
    • Preset Modes to optimize your audio experience for select gaming genres, movies, and music
    • Hidden noise-cancelling microphones deliver crystal clear voice chat and allow for a more streamlined design
    • Compatible with your PS3, PS Vita, favorite mobile device or MP3 player (connects via built-in 3.5mm audio jack and included auxiliary cable)

Available this fall for $149.99 (MSRP), this headset is an incredible value, giving you a great sound experience for gaming at home on PS3, or on the go using your PS Vita or mobile device.

As promised, we will be releasing a new PS3 firmware update to address the unintended effects in certain games that were created by the "Sidetone" feature introduced with the PS3 system software update (v4.10). Thanks for your continued patience.

Stay tuned for more updates on "PULSE" headsets, right here on the PlayStation.Blog.

Foosball 2012: Single-player and Multiplayer Options
    June 1, 2012 at 9:00 PM

Over the past couple of weeks we've taken you through the controls and cross-platform features, so this time we're going to dive into the multiplayer and single-player modes.

Real-world table football is the most fun when you play it with friends, and that's something we definitely took into account when developing Foosball 2012. Up to four players can play locally at the same time, whether that's two for each team or other combinations like 1 vs. 1 or 2 vs. AI or 2 vs. 1 and so forth. It's also possible for some of the players to play with PlayStation Move and others with DualShock 3.

Online multiplayer is also present, of course. You can play alone, or join up with a friend locally and take on the world together. Every victory nets you experience points and boosts your global ranking, so be sure to check the leaderboards to see whether your friends are above or below you.

If you do prefer single player, the game's World Tour mode lets you face off against 29 A.I. controller opponents. World Tour mode is where you can unlock all of the game's tables, balls, and foosmen customisations, as well as the national flags and team banners that you can select to represent you. There are nine different table types, six ball types and each will affect the gameplay in a specific way. Keep an eye out for some of the crazier options like hotdog foosmen, or a snowball. ;-)

Foosball 2012 will be released soon on the PlayStation Store for PS3 and PS Vita and buying the game on one platform means that you get the other version for free.

For more information about the game, visit our official site, or follow us on Twitter and Facebook.

Thank you for watching our Developer Diary videos. I'm looking forward to meeting you all online while playing Foosball 2012!

Soul Sacrifice for PS Vita: Inafune's Next Game is Coming to North America
    June 1, 2012 at 4:31 PM

Hello everyone! I’ve got some great news. A few weeks ago, Soul Sacrifice for PS Vita was announced in Japan and I’m sure many of you are wondering about the status of a North American release. I’m happy to announce that Soul Sacrifice is coming to North America! The legendary Keiji Inafune of Comcept is leading this project with MarvelousAQL, with Yasunori Mitsuda and Wataru Hokoyama working on the music and soundtrack. The theme of this game is “reality blended experience." You may wonder what that means, exactly. In celebration of the announcement in North America, Inafune-san has kindly sent us a description along with his comments.

    Soul Sacrifice for PS Vita

What I wanted to illustrate in this game was a “reality blended into a fantasy world." The word “fantasy” normally points to a story that is fictitious; however, with Soul Sacrifice I wanted to illustrate a “reality” within a fantasy that wasn’t sugar-coated. It’s not about focusing on the strange, but to flip the commonly held concept of what a fantasy theme should be with the concept of “reality."

Cruelty is a reality in our world, and we have to make sacrifices and pay costs on a daily basis. I wanted to blend this “reality” theme into a fantasy world, one filled with magic, and create a new type of gaming experience that relied on the player making sacrifices in order to obtain great power.

There is a “dark pleasure” lying in between fiction and reality that none of us knew was there. If you simply think of it as a “dark fantasy," then your expectations will be betrayed – but in a good way. Please look forward to Soul Sacrifice. It will be a game that players around the world will surely enjoy. –Keiji Inafune, Comcept

Soul Sacrifice for PS VitaSoul Sacrifice for PS Vita

Another key feature of this game is the concept of “sacrifice." In order to use sorcery during fierce battles, you must be willing to make a sacrifice – ranging from personal belongings, a limb, maybe even a life. How much would you be willing to sacrifice to gain ultimate power?

We’ll have more info to come at E3, so please stay tuned. For now, check out the video interview from Inafune-san talking about the two main themes of “reality blended experience” and “sacrifice” for Soul Sacrifice.

Class of Heroes II to Release this Fall for PSP
    June 1, 2012 at 7:20 AM

Class of Heroes II for PSP

MonkeyPaw Games strives to bring you excellent content from Japan. Today we're announcing the anticipated digital download release of Class of Heroes II on the PlayStation Network. The digital release, playable on PSP and PS Vita, will give users a chance to play the game with a beautifully localized adaptation, care of our partners at GAIJINWORKS. The game is set to debut this fall.

The game is a charming take on the Wizardry-style dungeon crawl games with a twist – all the party members are drawn from a pool of newly-enrolled students at a Sword and Sorcery School. It features 10 classes to choose from: Novice, Fighter, Swordsman, Ranger, Monk, Ninja, Sorcerer, Puppeteer, Idol, and one Mystery Class. Once the party is created, quests are offered and the party can choose their adventure path, unlocking ever more distant and dangerous areas to conquer as they grow in power and confidence.

Class of Heroes II for PSP

Monster parties can be more than one level deep in a single combat episode, leading to epic encounters of up to 12 or more monsters at a time, where managing a party's ranged and melee skills can be the difference between victorious life and an ignominious death. There are over 200 dungeon maps and more than 100 monsters to conquer as the story unfolds.

The school that serves as a base of operations is populated with professors and staff that can be helpful, mysterious, or provide comic relief – like the Professor of Alchemy and Cosplay, Giorgio.

Class of Heroes II for PSP

Class of Heroes II makes full use of PSP's wireless capabilities, enabling players to swap items with friends who also have the game and have their PSP in wireless range.

Japanese RPGs have a strong following in North America and Europe as we've discovered with our stable of hit PSN releases such as Vanguard Bandits, Alundra and the Arc the Lad series. These games had a common thread in that Working Designs was the North American publisher and localization house. Their reincarnation has brought us into contact with Victor Ireland and GAIJINWORKS and we're pleased to have them working with us on this game as well. Fans of their work will feel right at home with the charming, engaging localization and characters in Class of Heroes II.

We hope everyone has a chance to play Class of Heroes II, as its rejuvenated release is streamlined with a more robust experience. We believe our fans will appreciate how the game has elevated and what a premium localization can do for a deep game like this. It is a pleasure to be a part of this effort and to have our stamp on a series that will attain the same plateau of excellence in the West as it has in Japan.

First Look: Pro Evolution Soccer 2013 for PS3

Pro Evolution Soccer 13 for PS3

Pro Evolution Soccer 13 for PS3Pro Evolution Soccer 13 for PS3Pro Evolution Soccer 13 for PS3

A few weeks ago, we traveled to Sao Paulo, Brazil to meet with our fellow PlayStation bloggers in Brazil and to attend the debut of Pro Evolution Soccer 2013. This was the first time we had an opportunity to play the game, and some members of the development team were there to answer our questions. A few games later, here’s what we learned:

This year, the PES team has lots of new people onboard who are sure to inject new life into this soccer simulation game, which already has millions of fans around the world.

In addition to all-new AI that I noticed after just a few games, PES 13 has implemented many new features in direct response to fan feedback, including better control that gives you more freedom, such as manual passing and full manual shooting, giving you more control over your actions. It is a bit difficult to use at first, but highly rewarding once you master it. In the short time I used this feature, I obviously couldn't master it, and so I had to resort to traditional shooting..

Other improvements include more natural dribbling and defensive moves, especially when lines are arranged depending on your play. There are also goalkeepers with all-new animations who are more effective and have the ability to manually pass the ball for more precise counterattacks.

Now for what I liked best… the Player ID.

The Player ID is the digital representation of some of the top players in the world of soccer. This means that players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi, Ribéry, and Neymar can run, shoot, and dribble the ball just like they do in real life, reflecting the individuality and authenticity of the stars they are. PES 13 will have approximately 40-60 players using a Player ID, including forwards, the defensive line, and goalkeepers. Ranging from famous players to promising younger players, we were shown a video highlighting how the actions of various players were reproduced identically in the game. I must say, it looked fantastic in action.

The Player ID is a major feature for PES. After all, people go to soccer games to see the stars of the team, and it really makes a difference when you have a star on your team in PES 13.

PES 13 is still a game that requires decisions, from what to do with the ball when it reaches your feet to making a pass, running and facing your opponent, shooting at the goal, or simply freezing. If you do nothing, you lose possession of the ball. Fortunately, you can learn to make the best decision after a short time of playing, and become an expert in the sport, even if you never were before.

We spoke with Senior Producer Naoya Hatsum and Marketing Producer Manorito Hosoda to learn more about PES 13.

Pro Evolution Soccer 13 for PS3

PlayStation.Blog: You mentioned that you are not working on a PS Vita version this year, but are you at least planning some kind of PS Vita connectivity? For example, you could play on your PS3 and use your PS Vita for making changes or something in gameplay without pausing the game?

PES Team: We are thinking about adding connectivity on tablets and mobile communication tools, but not PS Vita at this time.

PSB: We know that the Americas are a huge market for you right now: Mexico, Argentina, Brazil and so on. Are you working to get any new licenses from this region? The US licenses for example? You know, soccer is growing in the US…

PES Team: We wish we could say something related to licenses, but we can't… at least not until E3! Of course we do understand that licensed teams are very important for Latin America market, for countries like Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, as well as the US major clubs.

There’s no simple way to express how Latin America is important to PES. It is a very important market and we're focus on it in different ways. What we can say at this moment is: Latin America is one of the most important market this year, and that’s why we have been here [in Brazil] in February and we are back here now. You know, it's a pretty long flight from Japan!

    [laughs]

And that's something we indicated in the last few years. For example, we included the Copa Santander Libertadores about two years ago. That was an example of how important Latin America market is for the PES series.

Pro Evolution Soccer 13 for PS3

PSB: You said there is going to be among 40 to 60 players replicated in PES 2013 using Player ID. Are you planning to include more players via DLC in the future?

PES Team: At this moment we don’t have any plans for additional players through DLC. However, if there’s a very huge demand from users or community asking for it, we may have to think of it. And if we do something like that, we don’t know if people would pay for it. Would you?

PSB: Well, that's a very good question. [laughs] But yes, I think I'd pay for it. Talking about community, you mention that user feedback is very important this year. So how are you collecting and implementing that feedback into PES 2013?

PES Team: Yes, community feedback is very important to us. Of course, listening to the opinions from fans is one thing, and that is going to satisfy users. But we also are creators, and there are features we want to offer that cannot be obtained through feedback from the users, because they are looking to the current product, and we are looking into the future. So, in a sense, we would like to surprise the players. That's something we also want to do. There should be a good balance between what we want to do and user feedback.

And we highly value user feedback because, depending on what they want, the actual gameplay may vary greatly. For example, Brazilian players can see football as something different from people in other parts of the world. So we would like to know these nuances, if there are any, by collecting all this feedback from users, because our game is intended for a worldwide audience, and we have to think about all these elements.

PSB: Playing soccer is about decisions, I think. For example, if you’re playing in real life, when you receive the ball, you have maybe a split of a second to think what to do – you may pass, you may shoot to the goal, maybe you can faint… How do you translate that into a videogame? I mean, PES is like super hardcore, it’s a game with a very difficult learning curve, but when you understand it, it’s so fluid, it’s so fast. How do you transfer the complex elements of soccer to the controls?

PES Team: As you mentioned, it is quite hard to translate that split-second movement from the real game, because a soccer videogame requires a controller. What we aim is to do is make players feel as if they are in the real field when playing with a controller. That’s always our ultimate goal. And we try to reach that goal by continuously adjusting the AI and tweaking other elements of the game and the gameplay itself. It’s something very hard to express with simple words.

PSB: Any chance we'll be seeing 11 players online this year?

PES Team: We can probably talk about that next year. [laughs]

PSB: You said in the presentation that Shingo “Seabass”Takatsuka-San is busy with another project, but at the same time he is still part of the team. So, how is he involved with PES 2013?

PES Team: We cannot detail what Seabass is doing at the moment. The only thing we can say is that he is working in a new project. As for PES 2013, he actually supervises the production of the game and is deeply involved with the main improvements we're making this year.

PSB: You mention a lot of new improvements like Full Manual Passing, and Pro-Active AI, but is there any improvement made on player customization? Because that’s a feature a lot of people love. They like creating players and playing with their own custom team. Are there any improvements in this area?

PES Team: Well, there are no major improvements or changes for the Edit features this year.

PSB: Up until now, all your DLC for PES has been free, for example new sneakers, new balls, player customization itens… With the market constantly changing, have you ever thought about offering paid DLC in the form of a huge DLC pack with new modes or seasons or tons of new features?

PES Team: As for this year, there will be no paid DLC, there is no plan for it. However looking at the situation, of course, we got the feedback from you that you would be pretty much happy to pay for additional Player ID, for example. So we may think of introducing something as paid DLC in the future.

PSB: PES is evolving every year, but talking about the future, where do you see PES maybe in three or five years? Do you want to be more social, do you want to see better graphics, improve AI or something entirely different?

PES Team: We believe people’s life style has been changing drastically, because of things like the new mobile gadgets and tablets, and cloud storage is also one factor… The game user itself has been changing because of the development of the mobile devices, so what we are trying to do is cater to all possible potential users. That’s what we want to do in the future. So not just reach console gamers, but also any potential user, including those using these new kind of devices.

    May 31, 2012 at 9:02 PM

San Diego Studio and Zindagi Games were blown away by the success of the multi-million unit-seller Sports Champions and with the newly announced Sports Champions 2, we're looking forward to providing new experiences for everyone to enjoy with an expanded sporting lineup featuring Skiing, Boxing, Tennis, Golf, Bowling, and a fully updated Archery experience.

Get a sneak peek in our newest trailer:

Sports Champions 2 revives favorite features, including the surprisingly deep and challenging single-player Cup Play and the customizable Free Play mode, plus fun arcade Challenge rounds for each event. We've made a ton of improvements, too: Three-point PS Move calibration is no longer required (and it won’t sacrifice gameplay; player avatars can be created and customized per event; a new profile system enables everyone in the house to play together with their own avatars and settings; and the photo booth is more customizable and easier to use.

You can play matches from any combination of events, including Challenge Rounds, and add up your score to see who reigns as the party champion. You can create your own match playlist, see photos and voices from each player during the game, and draw something humiliating (or nice!) on the hapless loser.

With E3 less than a week away, I wanted to take this opportunity to provide a quick update on what you’ll be seeing at the show in Los Angeles. We’ll be unveiling our multiplayer mode, which supports one to four players offline and one to eight players online, and I'm sure you'll be reading plenty of hands-on reports from the press during E3 week. I can tell you that it’s addictively fun — you won't want to put the controller down! We’ll also be showing off more of the single-player campaign that users will be able to explore, as well as some of the additional non-racing experiences that are unique to LBP Karting, so get ready!

Secondly, I wanted to quickly thank our friends in the press who have spoken highly of Sackboy’s newest karting adventure. As IGN put it…”LittleBigPlanet Karting is already an incredibly promising step up and a great new direction for the LittleBigPlanet franchise.” To give you a sense of the recent impressions out there so far, here are a few links— Chicago Tribune, Forbes, IGN, 1UP, Kotaku, Game Informer, GameTrailers, Destructoid, Digital Trends, GameSpot, Games Radar, Polygon, GameFan, etc.

Lastly, I wanted to pass along a quick reminder about our pre-order bonus offer. Those who pre-order the game through Amazon or GameStop will receive a bonus voucher code that grants access to the Kevin Butler DLC Pack, which includes the Kevin Butler Sackboy Costume and Executive Golf Kart. Into The Pixel 2012: PlayStation Artists Honored
    May 30, 2012 at 5:03 AM

Good news! Each year, the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences (ITP) and the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) present the Into The Pixel art exhibit, a collection of videogame artwork hand-picked by experts from the traditional fine art world and the interactive entertainment industry.

This year, we're excited to share that art from four exclusive PlayStation titles is included in this year's list of winners – The Last of Us (PS3), Journey (PSN), Gravity Rush (PS Vita) and wipEout 2048 (PS Vita) were chosen for this year’s collection. This is a true honor for SCEA and our developers.

Browse the gallery below to see the award-winning pieces (click to see the high-resolution versions) and read a few words from their creators. Congratulations all around!

    The Last of Us

    Developed by Naughty Dog, Inc.
    "Broken Overpass" by Shaddy Safadi

Early in the pre-production of The Last of Us we all gravitated toward the idea of “beautiful decay” and “nature reclaiming the Earth.” We also knew that if we were going to go for survival action we had to push it a different direction. Certainly there would have to be moments of darkness and fear, but as much as possible we wanted to capture the awe and mystery that inherently comes from seeing something man-made being slowly overtaken by nature. There is an insane love of detail at Naughty Dog…not just a desire for detail but a LOVE for it. The way a rust texture creates a pattern on a disused soda machine, the way light bounces and reflects through leaves, and the story behind how these things got the way they are.

In this piece, we had started with no overpass and giraffes instead of deer! Our thought was that they escaped from the zoo, but after some iteration we realized that the idea looked silly. We ended up with deer, and the overpass was a last minute add-in to give some movement to the piece; but it ended up being the focus. We also tried three or four placements of Joel and Ellie, coming in from the foreground, coming in from the right and in the end I decided showing their small scale was the most compelling.

I love the way this game is shaping up and I’m grateful for this incredible honor from Into the Pixel. –Shaddy Safadi, artist

The Last of Us: 2012 Into The Pixel

    Journey

    Developed by thatgamecompany
"The Call to Adventure" by Matt Nava

I’m glad this piece was chosen as this was taken directly from the game. This art piece is a collaboration between Art Director Matt Nava and Lead Engineer John Edwards, and one that captures the mood and essence of Journey. –Jenova Chen, Creative Director, thatgamecompany

    Journey: 2012 Into The Pixel

    Gravity Rush

Developed by Sony Computer Entertainment Japan Studio
    "Gravity Daze" by Takeshi Oga

This is the scenery of Vendecentre, the biggest downtown area of Hekseveille in PS Vita's upcoming open-world adventure Gravity Rush. I designed a great deal of scenery surrounding the city for this project. What I tried to achieve in this piece of art was to capture the best part of Hekseville and its surrounding atmosphere. The game itself is a series of intense action sequences; however in this image for a brief, quiet moment, our protagonist looks over her shoulder and sees the view.

When I was working on this piece, I had no idea that it would be used for the package art. I'm so pleased that our team found it to be such a defining representation of the game that they selected it for the cover.

Concept artists from overseas have always influenced me and that’s how I started working in this industry. I was not sure if my concept art would be accepted and valued overseas; so I am extremely happy and honored that my artwork was chosen for the Into the Pixel collection. I feel fortunate to be able to work on such a great title as Gravity Rush that inspires your imagination endlessly. –Takeshi Oga, Artist

Gravity Rush: 2012 Into The Pixel

    wipEout 2048

    Developed by SCE Studio Liverpool
"The 2048 Grid" by Darren Douglas // Art Directors Lee Carus and Marcus Tanner

The team has created a bunch of start-grids over the years in various Wipeout titles, and while it’s not something we usually get to explore in game too much, we all get excited and brainstorm ideas for just how those little pilots get into the ships and just how exciting it would be to be in that arena as the ships are being prepped for the race – the sounds, the smells, the anticipation. We always get carried away. This time, the race takes place on real city streets so we decided to have the ships and the pilots brought into the arena with much more fanfare in larger drop-ships and deposited on the race grid while the crowd looks on.

This image came as a bit of a surprise to me, it started off as a simple study of the unfolding gantry that holds the ship in check while doubling as the gangway for the pilot to get from the drop-ship to his or her racer….it ballooned into something a bit more intense, and once again, I got carried away. I added a city backdrop I’d created for an earlier image just to give it a little context. Now that I’d done the job of showing off the mechanism I realized I could put that version to one side and make another image which sacrificed the clarity of the mechanism for some real ground level intensity, something akin to the prepping of fighter jets on an aircraft carrier or the classic sci-fi launch sequences we all loved as kids. So I duped the ship fore and aft and was able to get some depth and chaos into the image.

In a previous concept I’d added large strips of intense red lighting on the ground that would change to amber, then to green as the race kicks off. This justified the intensity of the red under-glow that adds a little energy to the scene. So pretty quickly I’d wound up with a pic that seemed to sell a little of the drama of the race grid world. This is why I love the versatility of working on a computer, although I still can’t seem to drop that pencil for the initial stages. I’m pleased that this image has been accepted by ITP. It’s a good feeling when an image seems to work out – it more than makes up for all the ones that don’t! – Darren Douglas, artist // Art Directors Lee Carus and Marcus Tanner

MLB 12 The Show: Taco Bell Unlocks Home Run Derby Online Mode
    May 30, 2012 at 2:44 AM

MLB 12 The Show Taco Bell Mobile App

With the MLB season now in full swing, I have great news for baseball fans. Starting May 28th, you can head to your local Taco Bell, grab a Big Hitter $5 Buck Box, and download the Taco Bell mobile app to play the mini MLB Home Run Derby game. Then, for a limited time you can challenge your friends via Facebook Connect to see who the heaviest hitter is and after you battle it out, you’ll unlock the Home Run Derby Online mode for MLB 12 The Show on PS3.

And if you want to get the upper hand against your friends, bring your camera enabled smartphone to participating Taco Bell restaurants for more ways to play. Just pick up a Big Hitter $5 Buck Box to unlock cool features like the ability to play as MLB 12 The Show cover athlete Adrian Gonzalez. You can also search in-store to scan other MLB 12 The Show branded items to help you rack up extra points. Win or lose, Home Run Derby Online for MLB 12 is yours, just for playing via Facebook Connect – but you have to go to Taco Bell before July 9th if you want to get it first.

MLB 12 The Show Box Art (PS3 & Vita)

What is Home Run Derby Online, you ask? It’s an entirely new way to compete with other players on PSN. You can play against one or seven other users online (two to eight players simultaneously) for a chance to be crowned the Home Run Derby champion and earn extra XP. Users can enter into a “Random Match” against the community or “Play with Friends.” All players will see and be able to swing at pitches at the same time and watch each hit, which is represented by multi-colored hit ribbons that stretch from home plate to wherever the ball lands. The on-screen, in-game, real-time leaderboard lets you know who the leader is and where you stand so you're always aware of how you're doing against the competition. Pretty cool, right?

Also, be sure to check out MLB 12′s latest Challenge of the Week and related prize. This week, you can compete for a chance for a signed Limited Edition Josh Hamilton game cover. For more on MLB 12 The Show, visit our official site.

    Welcome to The Show!

Introducing Snapshot, Coming to PS Vita and PS3 This Fall
    May 30, 2012 at 1:22 AM

I'm proud to announce that Snapshot, our 2D puzzle platformer, is coming to PS Vita and PS3 (with cross-platform saves) this fall. In Snapshot, you control a robot named Pic. Pic carries a high-tech camera that can "capture" and remove objects and parts of the environment. You can then paste the picture back into the world causing all the objects to come tumbling back out. If you're looking for a new puzzle game with a twist, keep reading!

The game begins with Pic powering on for the first time in a dusty abandoned laboratory. Uncertain about his purpose and why he was built, he wanders into the forest that surrounds the laboratory. This is where you'll first start to use your camera to take photographs of objects. The first chapter of the game will hit you with a series of puzzles involving moving objects around within the levels, and it's easier than you think. If you want to reposition a box, simply snap a photo to capture it, then paste the picture back into the world and watch the box fall back out of it.

Snapshot for PS Vita and PS3

Snapshot for PS Vita and PS3Snapshot for PS Vita and PS3

As you progress through Snapshot you'll use the camera in new and interesting ways, like taking photographs of light and using it to interact with physics. Your camera even captures an object's momentum. This, combined with the ability to rotate photographs as you paste them, leads to more complex and interesting gameplay. For example, if a snowball is falling when you snap a photo, the snowball will hurl upwards if you paste that photograph back into the world upside-down. You can even use this to take photographs of enemy projectiles and aim them right back at them!

Snapshot is the first game developed by our small indie studio, Retro Affect. The sounds of Snapshot are created by the amazing Jordan Fehr, and the incredible music is composed by Wil Whitlark. Leave any comments or questions you may have in the comments below and I hope to bring you more Snapshot related news both here and at our official site as we get closer to our PSN launch later this year!

Resistance: Burning Skies Hits PS Vita Today, Watch the Launch Trailer
    May 29, 2012 at 11:01 PM

The wait is over! Resistance: Burning Skies hits store shelves and PSN today, ushering in a new era of portable first-person shooters. Dual-analog control isn't the only thing going for Resistance: Burning Skies though. In addition to the multiplayer features and weapon functionality we've introduced over the last few months, Resistance: Burning Skies brings a new hero into the war between man and the Chimera – and Tom Riley's story is one you won't want to miss. Take a peek at the debut of our Resistance: Burning Skies launch trailer!

Resistance: Burning Skies for PS Vita

This isn't all we have to share with you today though. You'll remember back in April when we talked about Resistance: Burning Skies' multiplayer modes we mentioned that through "near," Resistance: Burning Skies introduces a new social perk which rewards players with XP multipliers that you can carry into multiplayer battle. Today we're going to shed a little more light on exactly what that means.

So, as you play through the multiplayer experience in Resistance: Burning Skies, there's a chance that you will become "infected" with a form of the Chimera virus. Although being infected with the Chimera virus didn't end too well for Nathan Hale, these particular strains of the Chimera virus actually give you a bonus to your in-game XP multiplier. That means that you can have double and in some cases up to triple XP for a limited amount of time to gain levels and to unlock upgrades more quickly.

Resistance: Burning Skies for PS VitaResistance: Burning Skies for PS Vita

The really interesting part is that once you're infected, through "near" you can spread the virus to your friends or drop it off as a gift to a fellow PS Vita player. Conversely you can also pick up the virus that's been left behind by other Resistance players via "near."

If you're a shooter fan and enjoy portable gaming, get out there and pick up Resistance: Burning Skies today and join the fight against the Chimera on PS Vita!
