GSMArena.com - Latest articles: Samsung Galaxy A3 and A5 finally coming to Europe

Samsung Galaxy A3 and A5 finally coming to Europe
Jan 8th 2015, 22:54

Following the official launch in India of the Galaxy A3 and A5 two days ago, it appears the European market will not be left out. Firmware versions have been made available by Samsung for both smartphones for an extensive list of countries, indicating that initial production issues have been resolved and a European launch is imminent. Specs of the devices shouldn't be different from the rest of world, meaning the Galaxy A3 gets you a 4.5-inch qHD Super AMOLED screen, Snapdragon 410 with a CPU ticking at 1.2GHz, 1.5GB of RAM and 16GB of built-in storage with the option of microSD expansion, and a non-removable 1900mAh battery. The Galaxy A5 ups the RAM to 2GB and the battery to 2300mAh, while packing a 5-inch screen of 720p resolution. A better 13MP main camera also comes in the Galaxy A5 over the A3's 8MP shooter. The two phones follow the design language of the Galaxy Alpha, offering the premium feel of an aluminum frame in a more reasonably-priced package. A month is a long time, but earlier reports could give you an idea of the pricing ballpark. Source ...

Samsung expects Q4 2014 profits to drop 37% year-on-year
Jan 8th 2015, 21:38

Samsung has announced its earnings guidance for the fourth quarter of 2014, revealing an operating profit of 5.2 trillion won ($4.7 billion), down approximately 37% from the year ago quarter, but still better than the 4.06 trillion-won figure it reported in Q3 2014, as well as analysts' expectations of 4.9 trillion won. While the South Korean company's smartphone business continued to struggle, analysts said that increase in profit compared to Q3 2014 is largely due to improvements in its semiconductor division. Samsung expects sales to be around 52 trillion won in the quarter, down 12.3% year-on-year. The company will release complete financial results later this month. Source |...

Armed with the Bare Necessities, These Two Guys Are Attempting to Make History

Climbing El Capitan

Tom Evans, a climber and photographer, has been chronicling the very difficult feat Kevin Jorgeson and Tommy Caldwell are attempting: free-climbing El Capitan at Yosemite National Park. Free climbs refer to those in which climbing protection such as ropes, tri-cams, nuts, and other aid-climbing equipment, may be used to protect against injury during falls, but cannot be used in ascending the climb. This monolith of granite has been climbed in the past, but these two are ascending the Dawn Wall route, a sheer face of rock considered by many to be the most difficult free climb in the world. GSMArena.com - Latest articles: Selfie-centered Samsung Grand Max unveiled in Korea

Selfie-centered Samsung Grand Max unveiled in Korea
Jan 8th 2015, 20:04

Samsung's event at CES 2015 was lacking in smartphone flair, instead focusing on domestic appliances and what they called SUHD television. In South Korea though, they are launching the Galaxy Grand Max which is to hit local shelves on January 9 at KWR 319,000 ($290). From the front the device is an unmistakable member of the family, so much so that it is becoming increasingly difficult to tell which exactly Galaxy this is. The back is what distinguishes it with yet another iteration of the faux leather concept around the otherwise familiar flash-camera-speaker layout. The phone features a 5.25" display of 720p resolution in a slender 7.9mm body weighing in at 161g. Running the show is the decent Snapdragon 410 with its CPU clocked at 1.2GHz and a modem supporting LTE Cat 4. It is joined by 1.5MB of RAM and 16GB of built-in storage, as usual with a microSD slot for expansion. Power will be provided by a 2500mAh battery, which should be about adequate. The main camera is a 13MP unit, but Samsung is marketing the Grand Max as a selfie device stressing the 120 degree wide angle lens of the 5MP front snapper. It also allows voice operation to let you focus on making funny faces instead of shutter release. Source (in Korean) |...

These are the Last 5 Known Living Humans Born in the 1800s

Born in 1800s

For the record, the longest unambiguously documented human lifespan is that of Jeanne Calment of France (above) - lived from 1875-1997 - who died at age 122 years, 164 days. Believe it or not, she even met Vincent van Gogh when she was 12 or 13. This led to news media attention in 1985, after Calment turned 110. The longest undisputed lifespan for a male is that of Jiroemon Kimura of Japan (1897-2013), who died in June 2013 at age 116 years, 54 days. He was also the world's oldest living person from December 2012 until his death. Continue reading to see five of the last known living humans as of today.

Limited edition Gold Nokia Lumia 930 photos surface
    Jan 8th 2015, 18:05

A few days ago we reported on a new golden line of Lumia devices that Microsoft intends to release in limited qualities on the Chinese market. As it turns out the two devices on the initial banner are the Lumia 830 and the Lumia 930, just like we thought. A leaked set of photos, portraying the Nokia Lumia 930 with a golden finish prove that the device does exist, which consequently means that the release rumor should also be true. Besides the obvious gold-colored frame the handset, dubbed Lumia 930 Golden Collector's Edition features a gold-plated Nokia logo on the back. Only 3000 units are set to roll off the production line for now, each with a price tag of CNY 2899 (about $470). From what is already known it appears that the two remodeled devices should hit markets in China today (January 8). Whether or not they will become available on other markets is still uncertain. Leaked photos of the Nokia Lumia 930 Golden Collector's Edition The Nokia Lumia 930 is currently one of Microsoft's high-end Windows Phone devices. It offers a Full HD 5-inch AMOLED screen, 2GB of RAM, 32GB onboard storage and is powered by a Qualcomm MSM8974 Snapdragon 800 SoC with a quad-core Krait 400 CPU and Adreno 330 GPU. Intel Compute Stick – Windows 8 on your TV

These days having an Android smartstick jammed into the side of your TV is common place but up to now getting Windows 8 on there has been a process of connecting wires or using some form of screen mirroring software. Now however Intel has come up with the Intel Compute Stick which will come with Windows 8.1 or Linux pre-installed, all you have to do is plug it into your TV’s USB port.

    Intel Compute Stick

The Intel Compute Stick has a quad-core Intel Atom processor with 2GB of RAM, built-in wireless connectivity, on-board storage, and a micro SD card slot for additional storage so not only will you have Windows 8.1 you will also be able to install plenty of apps and perhaps even some games will work fairly well too.

It is going to retail at about $149 and the Linux will cost you $89 but comes with only 1GB of RAM, so not bad in terms of pricing but still way more than a €39 Chromecast.

Huawei bringing contract-free Honor devices to US
    Jan 8th 2015, 15:59

Although Huawei is among the top five smartphone manufacturers in the world, it has little presence in the US. But that could change in the future as the company is bringing its Honor line of smartphones to the world's second largest smartphone market, according to a Wall Street Journal report. Although Huawei hasn't announced an exact date, the company plans to sell unlocked Honor smartphones in the US "sometime later this year", the report notes. At present, an overwhelming majority of US consumers are buying bundled smartphones, but Huawei's Devices Chief Marketing Officer Shao Yang is of the view that contract-free phones will gradually become more popular in the country. "For us, the most important thing is really how to reach the consumer directly," he said. Yang also revealed that due to budget constraints Huawei will focus mainly on digital advertising, although he didn't provide any details on the company's marketing budget. The news comes a week after there were reports that Huawei's smartphone revenue increased by around 33% to over $11.8 billion last year. The company shipped around 75 million smartphones in 2014, up 40%...
