How to solve a problem like the music genre? Ubisoft think it’s cracked it.

The publisher has announced Rocksmith, a new music game with a twist. Don’t roll those eyes at the thought of another plastic peripheral; this game uses real guitars, those ones with the funny stringy bits instead of colored buttons.

Any guitar with a standard quarter-inch input jack can be plugged into a PS3, 360, or PC and then used to play Rocksmith. We’re not quite sure how this will translate into gameplay just yet, but with a promising line-up including David Bowie, Nirvana, The Rolling Stones, and The Black Keys among others, we’re looking forward to finding out.

The announcement trailer doesn’t show much other than promise, no gameplay footage or anything like that, just crazy rockers doing their crazy rocking.

Rocksmith is on track for a release in the back half of this year, developed in-house at Ubisoft.
